Special Waste Drop-Off Sites Set to Reopen Saturday, July 10, 2021
Sites, Located in Each Borough, Provide Residents a Place to Properly Dispose of Potentially Harmful Household Items
The New York City Department of Sanitation announced that its five Special Waste Drop-Off Sites will be reopening on Saturday, July 10, 2021. The sites, which have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, give residents a place to bring potentially harmful household items for proper disposal. The sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and the last Friday of the month. Sites are closed on legal holidays and may be closed during severe weather.
There is one Special Waste Drop-Off site in each borough:
- Bronx: Hunts Point at Farragut Street and the East River, next to the Fulton Fish Market. Enter on Farragut Street, off Food Center Drive.
- Brooklyn: 459 North Henry Street in Greenpoint
- Manhattan: 74 Pike Slip between Cherry Street and South Street under the Manhattan Bridge
- Queens: College Point at 30th Avenue, between 120th and 122nd Streets, at the northwest corner of the DSNY Queens District 7 garage.
- Staten Island: Located off the Muldoon Avenue exit of the southbound West Shore Expressway (440), past the DSNY security booth.
The Department’s Special Waste Drop-Off Sites are only for non-commercial materials from City residents. Anyone with a commercial license plate will not be allowed to enter the site. Upon arrival at the Site, visitors will be required to show proof of residency, such as a valid NYS driver’s license. For those not arriving by car, visitors may provide a picture ID and proof of residency, such as a phone or utility bill.
Residents may drop off the following items:
- Batteries, including automotive, rechargeable (such as small sealed lead acid batteries, Li-Ion, Ni-MH, Ni-ZN, Ni-Cd) and single-use (such as alkaline and lithium primary).
- To prevent the risk of fire, residents should individually bag each non-alkaline battery or use clear tape to cover the terminals before placing the battery in its proper collection container. Do not use opaque tape and do not bag or tape alkaline batteries.
- Motor oil and transmission fluid (up to 10 quarts per visit)
- Motor oil filters (up to two filters per visit)
- Fluorescent light bulbs & CFLs
- Latex paint (up to five gallons per visit)
- Mercury-containing devices (up to two per visit)
- Passenger car tires (up to four per visit)
- Electronics (covered by the NYS disposal ban)
“Our Special Waste Drop-Off Sites have been very popular with the public, and allow residents to safely dispose of their unwanted, but potentially harmful, household items,” said Sanitation Commissioner Edward Grayson. “We all have a responsibility to dispose of these items the right way, for the safety of our City, our employees, and the environment. We are thankful that we were able to receive the funding needed to reopen these sites.”
