| MTA New York City Transit, NYCDOT to Hold Town Hall in Canarsie About L Tunnel Reconstruction Project |
| MTA New York City Transit and the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) announced that they are hosting a town hall meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. in Canarsie to discuss the L Train Tunnel Reconstruction Project and the alternate service plan in place to accommodate customers. Organized in partnership with local elected officials including Congress Member Hakeem Jeffries, the town hall will include a presentation from MTA New York City Transit and NYCDOT followed by a question and answer session. NYC Transit President Andy Byford and senior NYCDOT officials will be in attendance.
“The Train Reconstruction Project represents the most massive undertaking I’ve ever been a part of in my career in transportation, but it’s also spurred some of the most innovative and collaborative work I’ve ever been a part of,” President Byford said. “The train will run throughout Brooklyn during the period in which the tunnel is closed, and there will be a variety of transportation options for residents in this area to travel to and from Manhattan. We want to use this town hall to answer any questions or concerns people have and make sure everybody’s ready for 2019.” “Contrary to what some may have heard, train service will definitely continue next year in eastern Brooklyn,” said DOT Commissioner Trottenberg. “Nevertheless, with the tunnel from Williamsburg to Manhattan closed, riders in East New York and Canarsie will definitely see their service affected next spring. That is why we are so grateful to Congress Member Jeffries for the opportunity to join a town hall and discuss the array of transit options — from new free subway transfers to alternative bus lines — that his constituents will need to know about.” Highlights of the town hall will include:

To get to the event, take the to Canarsie-Rockaway Pkwy ABOUT THE L TRAIN TUNNEL RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT The Train Tunnel – also known as the Canarsie Tunnel – was one of nine underwater tunnels that flooded during Superstorm Sandy in 2012, all of which required extensive rehabilitation and repair. The Canarsie Tunnel suffered extensive damage to tracks, signals, switches, power cables, signal cables, communication cables, lighting, cable ducts and bench walls throughout a 7,100-foot-long flooded section of both tubes. Bench walls throughout those sections must be rehabilitated to protect the structural integrity of the tubes. The scheduled 15-month closure of the Train Tunnel’s two tubes begins in April 2019.
