NYC Emergency Management Update – September

September 21, 2020

2020 Census Reminder

  • The 2020 Census is ending on September 30 and it is critical that all New Yorkers are counted. NYC stands to lose billions of dollars in federal aid every single year for schools, hospitals, health clinics, affordable housing, transportation, and more, as well as our representation in Congress and in Albany if we do not achieve a complete count.
  • The census is easy, safe, and confidential. It can be completed online (my2020census.gov) or by phone (844-330-2020); it is just 10 simple questions that can be answered in under 10 minutes. By law, all responses are completely confidential and cannot be shared with anyone ― not immigration, not the police, or your landlord. There are no questions about immigration, citizenship, criminal history, or income.

National Preparedness Month

  • September is National Preparedness Month, and it serves as a reminder to take action to prepare for the types of emergencies that could affect where we live, work, learn, and worship. NYC Emergency Management has created 2020 National Preparedness Month messaging toolkit, which provides messages that can be disseminated to your constituents through newsletters, social media channels and more.

  • Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30. As the highest potential for hurricanes in New York City occurs from August through October, make sure you know your zone and have a plan. Visit www.nyc.gov/knowyourzone for tips and information.
